In 2014, researchers from the Center for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) at Georgia Tech set out to quantify and assess Atlanta’s current urban tree canopy at the request of the City of Atlanta. The resulting data enables a greater understanding of the current state of Atlanta’s urban tree canopy and can be used to more efficiently identify areas for planting new trees. Through a partnership with Georgia Tech, Trees Atlanta has a new interactive map that showcases the data from this study.

Tony Giarrusso, principal investigator for the study and Senior Research Scientist and Associate Director of CGIS, will be sharing the study’s findings and how a new tool, made possible by the Google Community Grants Fund of Tides Foundation, is helping the City of Atlanta and Trees Atlanta restore and conserve the city’s urban tree canopy.

By using Google Maps and Google Earth tools, CGIS created easily-accessible customized tree canopy assessments that can be used to specifically educate neighborhoods, government groups and residents on tree canopy needs in Atlanta as well as determine specific tree planting locations. The new assessments will also be used in specifically-designed STEM curriculum aimed at middle and high school students. The tool will be live on our website soon so keep an eye out.
